Mama and 10 babies in medical distress

A pregnant momma in distress on Friday the 13th and a herculean effort to save her and her babies. We are not out of the woods yet and are asking for your positive thoughts, good wishes  and support.

We got the call on Friday the 13. Mama was there and needed an emergency C-section to save her and her puppies.  Of course, we said yes, VHS will take her in and take on the cost of care.

The amazing staff at Central Island Veterinary Emergency Hospital managed to save her and her 10 puppies.

She then went to a great foster home that luckily recognized when things weren’t looking right. Mama was rushed back into the emergency vet last night October 15, and they worked hard to save her life again.

All the puppies had to be bottle fed, and the awesome foster and another fantastic volunteer stayed up all night with them. This morning the puppies were moved to a volunteer who specializes in bottle feeding and has an incubator. Thank you Sharon Rubin and The Itty Bitty Kitty Committee.

Mama is not out of the woods yet, but we are hoping she will have enough will to fight so she can come home and be reunited with a few of her puppies. The rest will stay in the incubator until she is strong enough for all of them.

Please send all your best wishes to her and her puppies. We are crossing our fingers that everyone survives.

If you can imagine the tremendous effort it has taken with all the care of mom and newborns, all the driving from Victoria to Nanaimo and everywhere in between, and all the communication keeping everything running smoothly, then please send a shout out to all the people who worked so hard. A special thank-you to Angela Kaelble and Jeannine Heyer who really worked miracles.

Of course, all of this costs a lot of money too. If you can send a donation to support all the effort made to save this little family we would be very thankful. Everyone can be part of the lifesaving team.

You are the lifeblood of our work on behalf of animals.

As a non-profit organization, the Victoria Humane Society depends entirely on donations from kind-hearted people like you. Every month, we rescue literally dozens of dogs and cats, and sometimes other small animals, many from horrific circumstances such as neglect, starvation and abuse. The associated costs of rescue are significant, from arranging transportation for the animals out of remote communities and into our care, to emergency medical bills to save animals lives, to spay and neuter costs, vaccinations, hospitalizations, medications and on-going food costs and incidentals. Monthly and one-time donors are literally our most critical form of support. We thank you for donating what you can today.
