Just a reminder to all our dog lovers and owners to get your dog vaccinated for Parvo virus. There have been more and more outbreaks of this virus – and it can kill your dog. We recently had two litters of puppies come in with Parvo – they were kept completely isolated in foster homes and have now recovered and been adopted.
Here are a few facts about Parvo:
- Dogs that develop parvo will show symptoms 3-10 days after being exposed
- Symptoms include: vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea (usually bloody), and fever
- Mortality rate: 90 percent if left untreated, 5-20 percent if aggressively treated
- Puppies are most susceptible
- Extremely resilient, parvo can live in feces or other organic material for more than a year
- The only household cleaner that will destroy the virus is bleach
- Vaccination is the only prevention
